Banned chinese/japanese horror movies?

I was just watching Simpson's and they were saying saw was based on a Chinese horror or something then i remembered reading that there was an Asian thriller/horror that was so gruesome and realistic to the extent that the FBI had to check if it was real. And the series was eventually banned, and any movie made under that name would be illegal... does anyone know what it was called?
