All about neutering your puppy?

Your dog should not eat or drink after midnight the night before the surgery. Your dog will probably be kept at the vet for the better part of the day but the actual procedure is reletively quick and routine. He needs to recover and fully wake up from the anesthetic before they will let him go home. His food and water will be limited after the surgery (none till evening), the vet may prescribe antibiotics and/or pain medication (mine did not), the dog should not lick or bite at the incision site (they may give him a special collar to wear, it looks like a cone), he should rest/take it easy for about 5 days so the stitches dont re-open, he should stay out of water for 7-10 days. Check the site daily to make sure swelling is minimal, a small bump is normal but needs attention if it gets bigger or any leakage is noticed. If you have other animals in the home, they may react badly because he will smell different (like the clinic) so keep him isolated for a while just in case. Hope this brief info helps some. My dog was neutered yesterday and this was the info I got when I picked him up. Hes fine today. He doesn't even seem to be in any pain. **Remember though, he needs lots of love right now. He's probably feeling a little "drunk" and has some pain. A couple of extra pats are in order. Though routine, neutering is still surgery, after all.
